Truffle Treasue

Truffles are a fungus that grow underground. They can be hard to find, so people use pigs or trained dogs to find them.

Some people pay large sums of money to be able to eat them.

The most expensive Truffles are White Truffles from Alba, in Italy.

The most expensive truffle ever sold weighed 1.5 kilograms and cost $330,000! (You'd have to really love mushrooms to buy that!)

What A Headache

One of the oldest medical surgeries in the world is having a hole drilled into your head!

This is called "Trepanning", and there is evidence it was done as far back as the Stone Age (roughly 6500 years ago)

People believed it could cure many problems including headaches and evil spirits.

A Spanish fisherman helped them find it.

The bomb was said to be worth $2 billion dollars so the fisherman asked for $20 million dollars as payment!

Eggcellent Construction

About 400 years ago (around 1610) in Lima, Peru, a bridge called "Puente de Piedra" was constructed.

Over 10,000 eggs were used to help the stone in the bridge stick together.

This bridge's nickname is "The Bridge of Eggs".

Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring substance in the world, the only thing that can scratch a diamond is......another diamond!

Diamond is made when the element carbon is put under intense heat and pressure.

Carbon is the same element coal and graphite are made from. Graphite is used in pencils and isn't very tough at all ~ isn't it strange how carbon can form one of the weakest and one of the strongest substances!

Unhappy Valentine's Day!

While usually people give cards to express their love on Valentine's Day, there was a type of card designed to be given on Valentine's day to someone you wanted to insult.

These insulting cards were called "Vinegar valentines".

Vinegar valentines were popular between 1840 to 1940. They insulted everything including looks, intelligence and manners. These cards would sometimes cause arguments and fistfights.
